Winifred Hardage Stewart died peacefully after a brief illness on Nov. 30, 2016. She was born in Jacksonville on April 10, 1929 and was the daughter of Hugh Hardage, Sr., who died Nov. 30, 1963, and Winifred D. Hardage, the founders of Hardage and Sons Funeral Homes, now a part of Hardage-Giddens.
Wini was graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1947 then attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. She spent a great deal of time in Texas after marrying Sam Rhea Billingsley and living in Fort Worth while raising her two children. She lost her daughter, Shari Billingsley Jones, who died eight years ago. She has a surviving son, Sam Hugh Billingsley, who presently resides in Texas and wherever his RV takes him.
When Wini divorced and returned to Jacksonville, she worked at Hardage and Sons as a receptionist, then started her own catering business, Step and Fetch It. Wini was the best cook in the entire Hardage clan of 9 children. She was very creative with arts and crafts and especially enjoyed making Christmas wreaths, arranging flowers, and decorating tennis shoes. She also worked in the real estate business for several years.
Wini was a member of Parental Home Road Church of Christ and loved receiving cards and phone calls from church members during her 8 years in various assisted living facilities. She spent her last year at Brookdale of Orange Park where she easily made friends with other residents and the staff with her lively sense of humor and folksy wisdom. On Sunday, December 5th, a memorial was held there for the residents and staff who loved her.
Wini was predeceased by five brothers: Hugh Hardage, Jr., Robert H. Hardage, Donald A. Hardage, Richard O. Hardage, Gordon Hardage , and 2 nephews: Bradley Phillips and Victor Hardage. Survivors include her son, Sam Hugh Billingsley, stepson Tom Stewart III, her stepdaughter, Diane Anderson Connerat, as well as her three sisters: Mary Hardage Phillips of Arlington, Texas; Derry Jo Hardage Taylor, Middleburg, FL; Jeanne Hardage Chambliss, Jacksonville, FL; and 18 nieces and nephews.
The Hardage family plans a graveside inurnment at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery on Saturday, Dec.10, 2016 at 10:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers please make a memorial donation to a charity of your choice.
